Walking With You- Intro & Where we are now

Over the last almost 2 years, I've mentioned on here about Sufficient Grace Ministries and the wonderful ministry they have. Right now, they are running a once a week series called Walking With You as a way for baby loss moms to come together, to support & minister to each other. I realize not all my followers of my blog are baby loss families but in those cases, I feel in sharing openly, it can help educate those who haven't walked this path as chances are you know someone who has experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss.

This is week 1 and we are to introduce ourselves & share where are now.

For those who don't know me, my name is Jenn. I'm a child of the King, a wife to Kevin for over 14 years and a homeschooling mom to six (soon to be 7) precious children, living in Pa.

Our journey started in October 2009 when we found out we were expecting our 5th child. We were all ecstatic! I was feeling good, almost too good at times I commented, but I brushed that off. My pregnancy progressed well. I stayed active in running & even long distance biking up close to the end. I had been with an OB up until 18 weeks but then decided to switch to a midwife for a homebirth. So other than an early ultrasound to get a due date, I didn't have any other ones done.

My cousin & her husband owned a 3D ultrasound business,  one of those places you go for the "fun" ultrasound. So at 30 weeks, we went in for a glimpse of our baby. We didn't want to know the gender, just more or less see some face pictures. Of course baby was being stubborn & had hands held right in front of their face. So we decided to go back in a few weeks to try again.

At our next appointment, yet again the hands were in front of the face. After much poking & prodding, baby finally started to move the hands, and in those seconds, I caught my breath. I could tell right away our baby had a cleft lip. Of course seeing something physically wrong with your child is heartbreaking and I had this sickening feeling that there was more going on despite people telling us things would be fine.

Long story short (you can read more details under May 2010), we went back to the OB, who sent us to maternal fetal medicine for an in-depth ultrasound. Between that & an amnio, we were given the diagnosis that our son was "incompatible with life" and had Trisomy 13. From that point on, our lives were drastically changed forever. There is a lot more to Noah's amazing birth & our time together you are welcome to read and see how God's hand held our family during that time especially.

It's been 909 days since Noah died. And it certainly has not been an easy road since then. Many people (read, those who haven't lost a child) said with time, the pain will lessen. I don't think that is true. With time, I'm learning how to live with the Noah-size shaped hole in my life, and I don't think I will fully master it until the day I die. I'm learning how to incorporate my grief as a part of me just as if I was missing an arm. You can't ever get a new arm, you have to learn how to live differently with a part of you missing. And at times, that is hard work.

I think as time passes, I realize even more how much I miss Noah. You lose so much when your child dies. I miss seeing the relationship he would've had with his siblings, I am missing out on him discovering his world around him as an inquisitive 2 year old. So the times when those moments hit me, it makes me want to cry out in the unfairness of it all.

The tears still come & the grief still hits me, sometimes out of nowhere. Thankfully the good days outweigh the tough ones, but they are still there. Noah is a part of our everyday life, from talking about what he'd be doing today, to seeing his pictures around the house, to recalling how he felt in my arms, to including his picture when we take family pictures, he is ALWAYS a part of our family!

Though despite the pain & heartache I will always have, the only reason I am where I am today is the because of the hope I have in Jesus. I know my son is living today, just waiting for the day when we are all together again in Heaven. I know God placed our family on this path for a special reason and I am striving to use Noah's testimony & our journey for HIS glory!

Here's looking at you 2012!

It's truly hard to believe 2012 is coming to an end. If I was to be honest, the last almost 3 years have been a blur. Life as I know it changed and will always be known as before Noah & after Noah. How can't it be? When you've been through a major life altering event, you are forever changed from that moment on. This year continued to challenge me in figuring out my new normal since my son died. I admit, each year that passes that takes me farther from when I last held my son is tough. Though I try to remind myself each passing year brings me closer to the time I can hold him again. I am still so thankful for those who continue to walk with us during this journey & remember Noah and acknowledge my tough days I still have. You my dear friends are priceless and I know you have a special blessing awaiting you in  your Heavenly home for obeying the Biblical commands we've been given.

I don't even know where to start summarizing our year. We started out in a really rough place when Kevin suffered a severe head injury at the hands of medical staff after he was supposed to just be having a typical routine exam (that didn't involve his head). This left him off work for over 2 months, he lost all vacation time for this year (through no fault of his own, his work took it away sadly) and we still are dealing with many repercussions from this still today.

We were blessed in the ways God provided during that time. Once again we were reminded that He is all we need to meet our needs & the only One who can truly be there for us. And despite Kevin losing all his vacation time, we were so fortunate to be able to take some much needed vacations this year with friends and one of my brothers family due to some amazing deals we were given. I think God knew we need a lot of time away together as a family after all we've been through, as this was a rarity.

Crabbing at the beach house

Surprised the kids with a trip to Disney. They had NO clue until we were at the airport. They were given many surprises that week! (note the number of hats as one of them lol, click to enlarge pic)

We've enjoyed watching our rainbow baby blossom into such a sweet toddler this year. We were thankful to be able to celebrate her 1st birthday as well as Noah's 2nd birthday which were both on the same day, surrounded by many dear friends. We also did a neat lantern release as well.

We continue to enjoy our homeschooling journey. I can hardly believe this year I have 7th graders (our 8th year of homeschooling). I've branched out and this past summer started doing some curriculum reviews which has helped stretched us in learning of new products and being able to help others with figuring out products that work for their family. I truly enjoy having my kids at home with me. Sure, I have my moments like any other parent & seek out a few moments of alone time when I can, but I can't imagine not spending this valuable time with them. We only get one chance to raise our children & while I am far from perfect and fail, often having to ask my kids for forgiveness, these have been some of the best years. I love learning along side of them, seeing their faces glow as knowledge clicks and just being able to share intimately in ALL of life's ups and downs. We are a closer family for sure from being able to do life together completely the way we do.

Another challenge we faced this year was when Susan dislocated her knee. Oh my, the poor girl was on crutches for many long weeks then faced almost 5 months of physical therapy (which was twice a week, talk about time consuming!) She has to wear braces on both her knees for any type of physical activity or anytime she plays outside. Turns out she was born with loose ligaments and will someday need surgery to fix her knees. We also recently learned she has a deficiency in growth hormone & we are having to see several specialists asap at major children's hospitals. This cold weather has also challenged her asthma and adding more more specialists for her to see. We continue to remind her there is a purpose in all this and God created her to be just how she is no matter how tough things can be at times.

Despite our repeated ups and downs this year, we know we are still blessed. Although God continues to grow & stretch us, we continue thank Him for our 6 precious kiddos (and our soon-to-be-7th blessing). We are reminded that we aren't guaranteed each day & we strive to treasure each moment we have together.

I've been thinking on what word could I embrace going into this next year. Many crossed my mind but one that keeps coming back to me is HOPE. As I continue to face these tough challenges, I am reminded I still have hope no matter how bleak things may look at times.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope
Jeremiah 29:11

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Romans 12:12

A book I recently started reading is Heaven by Randy Alcorn. What an awesome book! This has helped remind of why I am living today and what I have to look forward to (and gives me a glimpse into what Noah is already experiencing.) The HOPE I have in Jesus!

Wishing you a blessed New Year!!

Day of Hope

Sunday August 19th 2012 marks the 4th anniversary of the founding of Christian’s Beach. Since that day we have remembered over 15,700 babies and children down on the shore of Mullaloo Beach Western Australia. We wanted to mark this anniversary of Christian's Legacy beginning by doing something special. August 19th is about honouring and remembering the lives of babies and children that could not stay with us. By doing this we are speaking out about the death of babies and children.

August 19th is a day to
break down the walls of society that keep pregnancy, infant and child loss a hush hush subject. People view the death of a baby as just a sad thing that happened. These babies that die are not sad things that happen. They are people, much loved and wanted children. They are brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandsons and granddaughters.

August 19th is about openly speaking about these children and celebrating their short lives.

By having this special day once a year we get people speaking about pregnancy, infant and child loss. And by doing this we break those walls down so that people are not afraid to speak about these children anymore.

Not a day goes by that we don't think of Noah and speak his name. We miss our precious son more than words could ever express and are so very thankful for those who aren't afraid to speak his name & remember him too!

“Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath….And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.”
