Catching up

I guess some of you may have noticed I haven't posted much lately. That's due to several things. Some of it is we've just been been keeping more to ourselves recently during this emotional time of Noah's 1yr of both his birthday and heavenly birthday. We've spent a lot of time together just as a family.  A lot of emotions to process with both days. Not only mine but also Kevin & the kids as well. It's been tough for all of them. Even in the weeks prior to Noah's birthday, I could see how it was affecting the kids. There were more tears shed, more talks about him & heaven, etc.

There was also the other reason of a baby.......

being born......

on....

July 13th.....

Yes, you read that right....our rainbow baby was born early.....on Noah's 1st birthday!!!!!

What are the chances? Especially when I go at least 2 weeks late. This was totally a God thing. I can't wait to share with you our story. One of where yet again God met us right where we were. I won't deny that it's been a time of up and down emotions. Both of joy yet tears, all at the same time. So that's partly why I've been a bit reserved lately. There has been a lot to process and work through, both on my end and in helping our kids. But stay tuned for the long version of our rainbow baby's birth story.

With all that said, let me introduce you to our 6th amazing blessing from God.....

Olivia Joy

She looks SOOO much like Noah, it blows my mind. Even in some of her mannerisms, she is just like him. Keep us in prayer as she has had some weight gain & eating issues that has kept me extra busy lately in trying to help her during nursing.

More pictures and her story to come when I have the chance. And thank you to so many of you who have prayed for her during my pregnancy!

A week of 1 years....July 13th, 14th & 18th

One year.

365 days.

8766 hours.

July 13th 2010
I can't believe that much time has passed since Noah made his miraculous entrance into this world and our arms, changing our lives forever. I thank God daily for Noah's precious life and giving us a glimpse of heaven through my sweet son. Happy 1st Birthday my precious Noah Alexander!

(more on his birthday celebration in another post)
Here's my posts from last year....

July 14th 2010
This was such a surreal day. I can recall the details like yesterday. Huddled on my bed as a family, cuddling you & talking to you as you took your last breath and left our arms for the arms of Jesus is something that is forever imbedded in our minds & hearts. No one should ever have to watch their child leave this earth. Yet you left so peacefully, there was definitely the presence of God in the room as the angels ushered you to Heaven, we all felt it. How amazing that all you knew in this life was love and so much of it!!! Happy 1st Heavenly Birthday!

July 18th 2010
The day we laid your earthly body to rest. Just typing that brings me to tears. It still doesn't some real at times. Where has this year gone? On one hand, it just seems like yesterday you were here & we were experiancing all this. Yet in other ways, it seems like this year has lasted a lifetime. I can't remember what life was like before you Noah. So much has changed. I remember wanting the viewing to last forever just so I could still see your precious face. But all too soon it was over. Then the pain of tucking your covers around you for the last time hit.

Tucking covers around you in a casket instead of a crib.....there are no words to describe how that felt.

Praise God we know that was just your shell, that you are alive and well in Heaven, anxiously waiting for us all to be together again as a family! As this first year has passed, we are 1 year closer to seeing you again Noah.

We are SO thankful for the promise of Heaven! And thank you to so many of you who have stuck by us this last year & have been such a great support to us. I don't know where we'd be without the thoughts & prayers of so many along with the many words of encouragement, hugs & those who have just walked alongside of us during this time in the valley. God bless you all for your compassion & selfless love!

Here is the video I made for Noah's memorial service.

We love and miss you SO much Noah!!!!

Remembering....

A local support group that is pretty new in our area had an event yesterday specifically for the surviving brothers & sisters of babies who have died. Last October I mentioned this group because we had attended their balloon release for our angel babies. So we were excited that they held their first annual brothers & sisters picnic & that we could attend.

The event was held at Hands on House & was only open to those registered in our group. Sad to say we've lived so close but have never taken the kids here. I went as a kid (eons ago) but was never at their new location. Needless to say my kiddos were SO excited about finally going here (and at no cost to us I should mention). They also provided a picnic supper thanks to the donations of local businesses. Was a nice treat for all of us!

There were many activities for the kids to participate in. There was a drawing for door prizes (which Sarah won one, a kit to make balloon animals), there was outside gardens & activites to explore then the museum itself.

This was a cute garden area that had 5 wooden stumps. You can see the 5th one on the right that is empty, that represents Noah!

This is the kids working on their necklaces w/Noah's name(Erik made a bracelet)

Here the kids are building their own race cars to send down the track.

The kids each had a "shopping list" and had to gather their supplies in the store.

The kids dressed up in the make-believe area.

It was so good for them to see that there are a lot of other kids out there who are going through what they are & experiancing the same emotions. I admit it was bittersweet being here. Each family represented was missing a loved baby. It was also comforting to be in the presence of SO many others who were just like you. For once, we were the norm, not the exception.

The support group bought a brick for all these surviving siblings in memory of their brothers & sisters. So sweet!

We were tickled to see this morning that Susan's picture made the online Sunday paper! Though I have to add, he said I carried my 4 kids late. He was wrong, it should've stated I carried all 5 of my kids late. Unfortunately, he had left Noah out of that. It was sort've heartbreaking to read, considering what the nature of the article was about. I did submit to have a correction made to that. It's a big deal to us baby loss families when our precious angels get left out. It hurts.

Yes, I realize I made that super large, but in order to read the caption I had to. If you want to read the full article, you can see it here . For a look at the support group, you can find that here at Sweet Pea Project .

We are so glad we had yet another way to remember you Noah! Our hearts are hurting right now as we reflect on where we were this time last year my sweet son. You are loved & missed beyond words & we are SO proud of you!!!

Calling all those with a camera!

Some of you may have noticed a few changes recently on my blog. I am slowly making some changes and am excited about some of the things I will be adding in the future. One of the things you've already seen is that I added a link to my facebook page for my blog. Feel free to click "like" and follow there as well.

But the main reason for this posting is to ask you all a favor. On my facebook blog page, under the photo tab, you'll see an album called "Noah's name pictures". My goal is to collect all sorts of pictures that have Noah's name in them. It could be anything from a simple picture, to something creative, photo-shopped, unique, unusual, specific to your area, etc. The ideas are endless & I would love any picture with his name in it!!!

With Noah's birthday coming up next week, I'd love to get some new pictures to help us celebrate his life. (though pictures taken any time would be gladly loved & welcomed!) So I'm asking you all to take a few minutes and help us celebrate Noah's birthday with some pictures with his name in them. Snap a pic (or more) and email it to faithjoyhope@ymail.com . Include your name and I will post the picture on my blogs facebook page with your name.

Thank you so much for taking the time to participate & bless us during this emotional time as we reflect on Noah's precious life!

Happy 10th Birthday Hannah Faith!

Today (7/5) was Hannah's 10th birthday! She has been counting down to this day for quite awhile. Partially because birthdays are a big deal, the other reason is because she was finally turning double digits!!!

Hannah originally wanted her free birthday smorgasbord meal for supper, but a little before 8am she decided she wanted her free meal for breakfast. So I quickly changed out of my gardening clothes (right before I was headed out), and away we went, just mommy & Hannah for our breakfast together. See, Kevin started a tradition with the kids several years ago. He normally takes the birthday kiddo out for their meal, just him & them. But she picked me to take her out this year.

We had a nice breakfast. How can't you at Shady Maple Smorgasbord! Tons of food to chose from. She ended her meal with half a filled iced long john (ok, so she convinced me to eat a half too!) Here she is with her long john & hot chocolate!

After we were done eating, we have a tradition of going down to the gift shop & letting them spend about $5 because they get a 20% off coupon to use. She found an inexpensive necklace that had the initial "N". She wanted to get that in Noah's memory. They had names for the necklaces but no boys names, so she settled for the "N".

Afterwards, we buzzed over to the store to get a few things & say hi to daddy.

Once we left there, she wanted to head to church to go visit Noah so he could be a part of her special day. I admit, this was hard for me to do. I was wishing she had picked Kevin at this point to take her. But it was her day & I was willing to do whatever she wanted. So we got there & walked down to Noah's grave. No sooner than we were there, she broke down crying, clutching his lamb she had brought with us. :( Of course, this made me cry. How unfair it was for her on her birthday to have to go to a grave just to include one of her brothers in her birthday. As we stood there arm in arm, I reminded her that Noah is celebrating her birthday in Heaven. I said in fact, he might've went running to Jesus all excited & told him that today was one of his big sisters birthday! She perked up at that.

With tears in her little red eyes, she asked if I would take pictures for her of her and "Noah" for her birthday with the camera she brought along. As I choked back tears, she posed on her little brothers grave with his lamb, braving a smile.

After we left, I had a surprise for her & the rest of the kids. We headed out to pick up a dear friend of the girls to spend the day/overnight with them!!! They had no idea I had made plans for this & were overjoyed at having Heidi over to hang out with.

They had a blast! They did so many things from playing games, playing with squirt guns & other stuff outside, sitting in the hot tub, watch us light fireworks at night, did their own mani's & pedi's, build a tent to sleep in, cook their own chocolate chip pancakes, etc. I am so thankful for the friendship they have with this sweet girl!! It definitely made Hannah's birthday a better day. Before she went to bed, she had came up to us & said she had such a fun day. She said though her most favorite part of the day was visiting Noah. Then she broke down crying again saying she wished he was here this year for her birthday. :( Last year I was still pregnant with him on her birthday & she felt him respond to her when she talked to him.

The kids playing cards out on the trampoline in the evening.

Here's a picture of Hannah's birthday cake she designed this year. She picked the picture, colors & wanted balloons! Oh Noah, how loved & missed you are!!!

38wks

38 weeks.

It doesn't seem possible that I am at that point. I have been having major de ja vue to last year at this time. Pregnancy after loss is tough no matter when it happens, but being on the same time line as I was exactly this time last year I think has added another level of difficulty to this rainbow pregnancy. I really don't know how to put it into words in a way that others can understand. Those who have been there, get it. Those who haven't, be thankful!

Coming up on my due date & Noah's 1st birthday & his death anniversary all at once sure makes for a  kalidescope of emotions. There really is no way to prepare emotionally & mentally for the coming days. So just like I've done this last year, I just go with it as it comes and ask for those around me to grant me compassion, understanding & support. I have noticed some of my friends have been sending little notes or messages lately & that means so much right now!!

I admit I am really hoping to have this baby early, like yesterday! But reality is, knowing my history of having babies who like to be well over-done, I could be looking at another 4wks of pregnancy if I go my typical super-late. I wanted this baby to be in our arms as we celebrate Noah's 1st birthday and reflect on his heavenly birthday. But just like I've learned this last year, it's all out of my hands. Not my timing but God's & I just have to trust he will allow this baby to make his/her entrance at just the right time.

In the mean time, I am trying to just keep busy. Well, as busy as my 38wk pregnant body allows! I've gotten some projects done around the house that have been ignored for a long time. My garden is doing really well & we've been picking stuff from it for awhile now for freezing, canning & just plain ole eating. I've been scoring some ebay deals for our homeschool curriculum & just working on getting organized for our coming school year. Which speaking of, it just dawned on me the other day, that this is the last year for my twins in elementary school as they are going into 6th grade!!! WOW, I'll have middle schoolers in a year! It doesn't seem possible as *I* was just that age not that long ago! lol

All things baby

This past Thursday evening some dear friends of mine surprised me with a baby shower! It was a great evening just spent sitting around chatting, sharing & laughing. We all didn't leave till almost 11pm, the time just flew by gabbing! It really meant a lot to me that these ladies (as well as others who couldn't make it) reached out to encourage & support me. Not only did they celebrate this new baby, they also remembered Noah which meant the world to me.

In addition to the diapers, wipes & cute toy they gave us, a group of them also went together & got us a pack-n-play. What blew me away was the thought that was put into the specific design they chose. This pack-n-play matches the color & theme of the nursery I had painted for Noah a year ago!! While this gift is for the new baby, it also has a part of Noah tied in with it which I just love! I really appreciated the thought that went into them including Noah as well. They get the fact that just because this baby is coming doesn't mean Noah gets pushed aside or forgotten.

In fact, Noah & this baby share a special bond. In the baby loss world, this coming baby is known as a "Rainbow Baby" which you may hear me reference more in the future.

"Rainbow Babies" is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm experianced from a child that has died nor diminishes it. When a rainbow appears, it doesn't mean the storm never happened or that the family is not still dealing with its aftermath. What it means is that something beautiful has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds. Storm clouds will still hover but the rainbow provides a counterbalance of hope.

This baby in no way replaces Noah or suddenly makes everything all better. Both of which has been stated to me in comments from people during this pregnancy. I share that because if you know of anyone that is in my shoes, whether now or in the future, just be sensitive in what you say to them during a pregnancy after a child that has died. Pregnancy after the death of a infant is in no way the same as pregnancy before a loss. The innocence is gone & is replaced by a whole new set of emotions and experiances which can feel isolating at times as most people just don't understand.

On that note, while we are waiting for our rainbow baby to make an appearance any day now, I set up a baby guessing game as a way to help distract me right now from all these crazy emotions these coming weeks will hold. Feel free to play along. I plan to print this out then for the baby's book.

Fathers Day

Today was a pretty nice day overall. I admit there were tears shed because Noah wasn't here to be a part of it all. I know it was hard for Kevin not to be holding one of his sons in his arms especially today on a day that honors fathers.

During church today, our pastor had all the dads stand. Then he had slides of funny statements to eliminate the guys as he was giving away a gift card for some car washes & oil changes. Had to laugh, one of them was "if your wife dressed you today, sit down!" And yes, several guys sat down. lol Another one was "if you don't own a mini van or full size van, sit down." By the time they got through several of these, it was only Kevin & about 3 other guys standing. Then our pastor said the tie breaking question is.........who here standing has the most kids? Well, guess who won?? Yup Kevin!! The pastor said he has 5 kids with 1 on the way. Pretty neat!

The kids were all excited this morning to give Kevin the things they either picked out for him or made. After church, I cooked a big lunch over charcoal (well, some things I made inside as well). I even picked our first zucchini & grilled that along with other veggies, yum!

I'm sharing a video I put together for Kevin from all of us. (Though admittedly, I was hoping to have the baby today, what a great fathers day gift THAT would've been!!)

To a dear friend I sing today
A friend that taught me God’s ways
He’s always been there for me
And in his loving arms he cared for me

 Thank you Lord,
for my dad
Pour your blessings on him today
Thank you Lord,
for his life
My father whom I love so much

You’ve always been an example for me
Reading your Bible and praying every day
Your words will always be my inspiration
And thanks to you, I’ve become who I am

Thank you Lord,
for my dad
Pour your blessings on him today
Thank you Lord,
for his life
My father whom I love so much

I love you dad!

I'm SO thankful for the wonderful dad my kids have!! He goes above and beyond in all that he does for us. Thanks for being a great dad Kevin, I love you!

Headstones

So today I finally decided to take the step  and inquire about a headstone for Noah's grave. Not exactly how I wanted to spend this beautiful morning.  But really, what time is a good time to look at tombstones for your dead baby. There is no good time. Just saying.

So I walk in and kinda just stood there not knowing what to do next. I see 2 different offices, thankfully a lady came out to me & asked if she could help me. I stumbled over my words saying that I was there to see a certain person a family member put me in touch with. Then she asked if I wanted to see something specific. I said I needed something for my son. Of course then I choked up and about started bawling. I tried to suck it up. How can you though? This is certainly NOT something most people have to do for their child. I could tell she seemed sympathetic but didn't know what to say. So she starts in on my obvious baby belly and asks when I'm due. Uh, I'm due the day my son, whom-I'm- inquiring-about-a-headstone for, died. "Oh" I'm met with.

It's ok. I'm starting to get used to the awkwardness.

Anyway, I had to sit there for about 25 min waiting for the gal I needed to see. Amazingly, God provided a text from a special friend who had no clue where I was but needed the extra words & encouragement. (thank you Tracey!!)

Long story short, I got to talk to the gal, saw some of the headstones & got prices. There is a LOT to think about & a lot of choices. It is definitely not something you can do on a whim. This whole process takes a lot of thought and planning.

But doing this just is a painful reminder that it is all so final.

Designing a headstone is something so lasting. So permanant.

*sigh*

It's not easy. What's even crazier....today it's been exactly 11 months since Noah's precious heart stopped beating this side of Heaven. I am due with baby #6 exactly one month from today. Talk about a lot of emotions. It's weird how you can be happy & sad all in the same breath.

Honestly though, right now, I'm more sad than happy. I've got a lot on my mind. More than one person should ever be faced with thinking about (seriously though, I've had my share more than most ever get in a lifetime, I need a break, it's just not fair). Please just keep us in prayer. We've got some things to face in the coming days.

11 months old

Oh my sweet, precious son, I can hardly believe you are 11 months old today! Where does the time go? If you followed your siblings footsteps, you'd finally be cutting a tooth or 2. They cut teeth super late. You'd be pulling yourself up and cruising along furniture. Though knowing your older siblings, they would be trying to get you to walk on your own. lol

The kids have really been missing you lately. I'm sure you've seen the tears they've shed the last few days. Hannah wished you had been with us boating & swimming this weekend. Erik has wanted you here to play games with and watch him as he starts football. He is worried how you are going to feel being a big brother but yet not being here to be a part of it all. He doesn't want you left out.

It was hard for all of us to be at your grave yesterday after church. It is so difficult being there and envisioning your body being just feet underneath us. We know YOU aren't there but still....it's just not fair we have to go to your grave to be a complete family. The girls & I have been reading the book "Heaven is For Real" and wow....reading that gave us a glimpse into a day of your life in Heaven. You can see us and know what we are thinking & feeling. Which is comforting. I am glad you know just how much we miss & love you!! Not a day goes by that your name isn't mentioned amoungst us. And have you seen the notes the kids write you & the art projects they make for you?? You are the most popular baby ever Noah!!

We're one day closer to being together again. Hang in there my sweet son, we can't wait to see you! We are proud of you & love you so very much Noah!!

Camping

I know, I know.....I've been slacking from here for awhile. It's been a combination of things, a few crappy days, busy with stuff around here, mini-vacation, finishing homeschool paperwork, etc. So now I am trying to play catch up, just bear with me! :)

The other weekend we went good ole fashion camping!! It was a last minute trip for us. A bunch of friends from our homeschool co-op were going and it happen to work out that we were able to borrow an RV. Yes I know, we were sorta spoiled! It was just a small 31' with a slideout. We were just thankful to be able to have something to use.

We headed northwest of us to Mifflinburg Pa, about a 2 hour drive. Of course the kids wouldn't have cared how long we drove as they had a blast being able to just chill and play games (seat belted of course) in the RV.
This pic was taken on the way home, tired kiddos & animals!

We got there about 8:10am Friday morning. I unfortunately had not slept a wink the night before. My stupid insomnia has been really bad lately. I haven't been sleeping past 3am and it just so happened that night I couldn't fall asleep (no, it was not from being excited! lol) So here I was, wide awake since 4:30 am Thursday morning & we were now 28hrs into no sleep. I was feeling fine though.

2 of the families were already there prior to us. There was a total of 5 other families besides ours....in total, 12 adults, 18 kids, 3 dogs and 1 kitten who thinks she's a dog and had to come along so she didn't go nuts without human company. (yes, this is our goofy kitty). We had all of our sites situated together which was really nice.

We had great weather! It was actually cooler than I anticpated. Thankfully I had had the kids all pack warmer clothes just in case. It was close to 90* when we had packed but I knew from the past when I camped, to always be prepared cuz it can get cool. We actually had sweatshirts on at different times and didn't even have to turn on the a/c at  night (the kids actually said they were cold overnight at times). It was perfect camping weather and made sitting by the fire great.

The campground had just opened their pool so our group was the first to break it in for the season. In fact, we had it to ourselves on Friday. It felt nice just sitting out in the sun. Of course, I got tired of having the sun hit the front of me, so I took my kids small swimming tube and laid it down on the chair and plopped my big ole prego belly in it. It was a perfect fit and allowed me to lay on my stomach which I haven't been able to do in months! (yes, I do know I looked kinda goofy, who cares. This momma was comfy!)

Yes there IS a 35wk prego belly there!

We did a lot over the weekend....swimming, biking, fishing, sports, and lots of cooking over the fire! From hot dogs & burgers, to s'mores & mountain pies. Oh boy did we get creative with the mountain pies! We used cherry & apple pie filling. But we also made one where we spread peanut butter on bread then put in marshmallows & chocolate & roasted, YUM! Then the one morning, I took the leftover veggies from a foil packet I made the night before (peppers, potatoes, onions, mushrooms & bacon) I put that in my mountain pie maker, then cracked an egg over it, sprinkled some salt, pepper & cheese then roasted it over the fire. Oh. My. Word!!!! It was amazing!!!! In fact, I got the group hooked and a lot of the others used my roasted veggies & made omlets as well!

The one day we played a round of kickball on a field, adults verses kids. That was hilarious to watch! The kids did awesome and some of the adults pulled muscles. lol The adults ended up winning but the kids sure did put up a good fight.

There was even a DJ the one night playing songs. I was down with some of the kids and they had a blast with the chicken dance & cha cha cha slide. We had went back to the camp site and a bunch of the girls wanted to go back to the dance. Bless James' heart, he took a whole group of girls down! I only wish we had gone down for some pics. Rumor has it he was hula-hooping with the kids amoungst doing a bunch of other crazy dance moves!

We did have an afternoon shower the one day that forced everyone into their campers. I guess since we had the dvd unit, the kids felt compelled to hop in ours. Which was fine. But it cracked me up to see how many kids squished themselves into our RV to watch Gnomeo & Juliet. lol We had more than this at one point, this was when it was quieter. ;)

Another day we played basketball, kids verses adults again. It was only half a court and all the grass surrounding the court was a major muddy mess. Anytime the ball went out of bounds, someone was getting muddy. I wish I had snapped the pics of Kenny stumbling then falling face first into the mud. What a great game!

It was awesome how great our group got along! And it was nice to spend a long weekend with these families that we see every week at co-op but don't usually have a lot of time to sit down and chat with. We shared SOOO many laughs (not good for a 8 month prego gal who could've peed her pants). But there were also just has many heartfelt, deep conversations that just bonded us all even closer than we had been. There is definitely something special shared amoungst all of us and I am so thankful for this amazing group of friends!!!

Right where I am now- 10 months 2 weeks

Thank you to Angie from Still Life with Circles for starting this topic & opening the doors for many of us to share our honest thoughts and feelings. Check out her page for many other baby loss moms participating in this project (everyone is linked up at the bottom of her post). It's been encouraging to me to read many of the other stories. Many moms who are further along in this journey give me hope as to what I one day will reach. And many others who are around the same time as me make me feel not so alone in what I am currently experiancing. It's been theraputic to just sit down and pour out my random thoughts.

I started this blog when we got Noah's fatal diagnosis. I wanted a way to keep others up to date as it was sometimes hard to keep relaying the same info over & over. I have since used it as a way to openly express my feelings in regards to where I'm at in my grieving but I also throw in other day to day things as well. I guess you could say that's sort've reflects my life right now, a mix of the everyday things with grief tossed in the mix.

I am realizing that by me being so open, there are some out there who have been judging me & putting me down for things I say. Honestly, I really don't care. I have tried to be as honest as I can be for the benefit of others who are also walking this same painful path as me. I know what a lifeline it has been for me to read the blogs & converse with other baby loss moms & see that I am not alone. I hope to be an encouragement to those coming behind me and to help someone else like I have been helped by others who have been open with me.  So despite those few negative people, I choose to be open & continue to share. What benefit would it be to me & others to slap on a fake happy face all the time & not be honest in what I am experiancing?

I have contemplated the question, just where AM I right now? The answer to that question can depend on what day, even what hour you ask me that. Even as I write this out I find it hard to gather my thoughts in a way that makes sense. Today, I am feeling pretty good. Days ago, not so good. It just really depends.

The other night we were under some severe storm warnings & a tornado watch. Usually that never bothered me. But I guess with how bad it's been happening to others across the country, I did feel the need to take it more serious than I had before.  I was in the process of cleaning up from supper. The kids were all aware of what was going on with the weather. I noticed they had all quietly went and grabbed their "Noah dolls" and the clothes Noah wore. They sat around clutching them. What they hadn't noticed till later was that I had sort've done the same thing. I went into Noah's room and got his blanket, hat and the book with his hair clipping in, put it all in a bag and had it sitting nearby in case we had to take cover downstairs. The thought of possibly losing those few tangible things of Noah that I can hold, brings me to tears. That's just a glimpse of how life has changed for all of us. We just do some things differently now. Maybe years down the road we wouldn't have done that. But that's just where we all are at right now.

Looking back, I can see the slow progress I have made. Grief isn't something you get over, it is forever attached to you when you lose a child. It's always there. Somedays it's tucked into a back pocket, just quietly poking at you on occasion. Other days it's clutched in your hand, front and center, forcing you to handle it then and there.

I have learned if you try to fight the wave of grief when it hits, it will take you down and almost drown you. I am learning to allow the grief to weave in and out of my life as it needs to. To swim with the current of grief until I hit calmer waters. This means there are days when I don't shed any tears and am I grateful for that. But there are days when it just drains you trying to do the simple, everyday things. Sometimes there are things that trigger the wave of grief. Other times there is no specific reason that I end up in tears. I am learning to accept that it is what it is and that however I feel each day is just where I am supposed to be at in that moment.  For whatever reason, God chose to bring our family down this path. I am just trying to learn to handle what we've been given. There is no manual on grieving just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Everyone does it differently as well.

At times I find myself floundering in trying to figure out just what is the new normal now. Who am I? Gone is the innocence of life and the cliche that "that will never happen to me". Noah has reminded us of just what is meaningful and precious about life. He has certainly changed my outlook on a lot of things.

I admit I am jealous of those baby loss moms who have a huge network of support from family. I can see how a great support system can really make a big difference in terms of how they handle things and grieve. Neither Kevin or I come from a family like this. I am truly thankful for those few family members who have reached out & have continued to help.....who talk about Noah, acknowledge his life & keep tabs on us still....who proudly have his photo up & count him as one of the nephews, grandchildren or great-grandchildren......

 Who simply remember Noah.

Nothing makes me more happier or prouder than someone who mentions Noah's name & includes him in whatever it may be, no matter how small it may seem to someone else. Seeing his name written on a Christmas card made my heart soar or someone making a donation or doing something in his memory shows me he is just as loved and valued as the rest of my kids. I love talking about Noah and including him just as much as I love talking about the older kiddos and including them in things. In our eyes, there is no difference. I have 5 kids (almost 6, Lord willing). And it will always be like that.

If Noah were here in my arms today, people wouldn't think twice to mention him or comment/like a facebook status about him. WHY is it so hard for people to do that now just because he died? He is just as real to us now as he was 10 months ago. People around us need to accept the fact we will not stop talking about him or including him in our every day lives. I am tired of feeling like I have to tip toe around in what I say or do just because others around us are uncomfortable in handling grief and death and our sometimes raw emotions. I shouldn't have to feel like I need to hold my feelings in for the sake of making someone feel at ease. Us talking about Noah, whether it's happy memories or reflecting on the sad ones, is a way of coping and healing. Trying to surpress that just makes things worse for us.

We have had people walk out of our lives due to those very things since Noah died. Some people simply can't handle grief and all that comes with it. Like the saying I came across recently said "when you are up, your friends know who you are, when you are down, you learn who your friends are." Grief is not something for the faint of heart. Grief is dirty, hard. Precious are those people who aren't afraid to get in the trenches with a grieving person and walk alongside of them, however long it takes. God has brought people into our lives because of Noah, he has strengthened some relationships of people who were already a part of our lives, and he has taken some people out of our lives which I can only assume are for our benefit and growth.

Simply put, losing a child is not something you "get over".  There is no timetable on grieving. It is an ongoing thing, just some days it's more prevalent than other days. I am SO thankful to the people who have chosen to stick by our side no matter what, through all the ups and downs these last 10 months have thrown at us. I am thankful they can see the beauty through the ashes and aren't giving up on us.

In some ways, I long to go back to how things were 13 months ago, anxiously anticipating a new baby. I hate how I feel some days. Don't get me wrong, I do have days where I feel good and get things accomplished. I appreciate & cherish those days! But on those tougher days where grief rears it's head to the surface, just trying to do simple things can be difficult. Add on to this is that I am at the same gestation now  as I was last year with Noah. It brings back a lot of memories. At times, I feel like I am where I was last year at this time. Being due with this baby on the day he died gives us mixed emotions. On one hand, I feel like it was a sign from God & Noah. On the other hand, it is hard as we get closer to Noah's 1st birthday as well as being the end of this pregnancy. Those end-of-pregnancy hormones mixed with some of the tougher days of grieving makes for a yucky combination at times I think.

Another aspect sometimes people forget about is, is the kids and how this has all impacted them. I could be having a good day emotionally but then one of them make break down crying which then can sometimes trigger me into tears. It breaks my heart that I can't take away their pain or do anything to lessen it.

But in the same sense, I wouldn't trade this last year at all. The lessons Noah's life has taught us and are continuing to teach us are priceless. We have grown as a family, individually and together. I have gotten emails from complete strangers who have been encouraged by Noahs testimony that they happened to come across it on the internet. And that makes me thankful! I want his story of strength & what God has done to be heard by others. It is my prayer to share with others our journey, both the good and ugly, so that they can see the hand of God in our lives. While I don't have the answers as to why it all happened to us, I DO know there is a greater reason. One I may not know of on this side of Heaven. Our faith is what has gotten us to where we are right now. I'm not sure where I'd be right now without it.

So where am I? I am here, just trying to do the best that I can where I am right now. Today I am feeling good and I am thankful for that. I am just taking things 1 day at a time.
